Highlights of Vision-Aid Programs across India – In the past quarter

In the heart of our mission to serve the visually impaired, we present a snapshot of the profound impact achieved during the past quarter. All our Vision-Aid programs has empowered us to touch the lives of over five thousand visually impaired across India, spreading the light of hope and opportunity. 

 Vision-Aid @ Aravind Eye Hospital, Madurai 

 Aravind Eye Hospital in Madurai continues its legacy of inclusive eye care. This quarter witnessed over 1,800 patients benefiting from comprehensive services, emphasizing early intervention for pediatric care and affordable low vision solutions. Noteworthy community outreach efforts include special screening camps at local schools for children with disabilities, underscoring our commitment to reaching every corner of society. 

Furthermore, our international collaboration welcomed Mr. Sindikubwabo Jean Paul from Rwanda, enhancing his expertise in ophthalmic care through a three-month training program. Together, we’re fostering a global community of eye care champions. 

Vision-Aid @ Aravind Eye Hospital, Tirunelveli 

The Vision-Aid Resource Center at AEH Tirunelveli has been a beacon of hope for over 500 beneficiaries this quarter. Our focus on early interventions for children with Cortical/Cerebral Visual Impairment saw a considerable increase, reflecting our dedication to addressing diverse needs within our community. 

Highlights include the inauguration of a Digital Resource Training Room, empowering visually impaired individuals with essential skills for the digital age. Additionally, faculty development programs and counseling sessions underscore our holistic approach to rehabilitation. 

Vision-Aid @ Aravind Eye Hospital, Tirupati 

The Vision-Aid Resource Center at AEH Tirupati served nearly 200 patients, delivering approximately 300 interventions and services. Notably, our emphasis on low vision assessments and early interventions has garnered increased referrals, amplifying our impact within the Tirupathi region and beyond. 

 Vision-Aid @ Aravind Eye Hospital, Pondicherry 

AEH Pondicherry served ~400 beneficiaries this quarter, offering comprehensive low vision assessments and interventions. Our commitment to community engagement was showcased through an enlightening exhibition, raising awareness about eye care among school students and the wider community. 

Vision –Aid Resource Centers @ LVPEI Hyderabad and Vizag 

 With nearly 300 beneficiaries undergoing advanced rehabilitation and training programs in the past quarter, LVPEI Hyderabad continues to be a pillar of support for the visually impaired. The inauguration of a dedicated Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI) Resource Center in Vishakhapatnam marks a significant milestone, offering end-to-end management for patients with CVI. Additionally, the distribution of Smart Vision Glasses and success stories of individuals overcoming vision challenges inspire us all. These programs were showcased recently at our Spring event, and we were honored to have Prashanth and Anuradha join us as our Chief Guests for the event. 

Vision-Aid @ Dr. Shroff’s Charity Eye Hospital, Delhi 

SCEH Delhi served over 500 beneficiaries this quarter, witnessing a significant increase in counseling and low vision device training. From community screening camps to certificate courses, our efforts are geared towards empowering individuals with visual impairments to lead fulfilling lives. The students and team were very happy to meet Mr. Ram Gupta who dropped in for a visit during the quarter.  

Vision-Aid @ CECF, Pune 

At the Dr. R.S. Ayyar Vision-Aid Center, CECF Pune served nearly 400 beneficiaries, focusing on comprehensive eye care for school children. Notable achievements include the launch of a Computer Training Program and the inspiring success story of a patient who found renewed hope through education and skill-building. 

 Vision-Aid @ The Voluntary Health Services Hospital, Chennai 

VHS Chennai served 300 beneficiaries, with a particular focus on optometry education and training. Smart Vision Glasses distribution events and ongoing training initiatives underscore our commitment to leveraging technology for inclusive eye care. 

Vision-Aid Resource Centers @ Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai and @ Sankara Nethralaya, Kolkata. 

With a steadfast dedication to comprehensive vision rehabilitation, Sankara Nethralaya served 200 beneficiaries, offering a range of therapeutic interventions and support services. Notable highlights include community engagement initiatives and the heartwarming success story of a one-year-old showing remarkable progress through our interventions (one of many success stories celebrated on our web site and social media feeds. 

 Sankara Nethralaya Kolkata continues to be a beacon of hope for those with visual impairments. From school screening camps to comprehensive rehabilitation services, our efforts are geared towards empowering individuals to pursue their dreams. 

Sitapur Eye Hospital 

Thank you for the support which enabled our newly partnered resource center at Sitapur Eye Hospital to serve 250 beneficiaries, emphasizing low vision services and rehabilitation. Notable highlights include hosting workshops and participating in panel discussions to raise awareness about visual impairment. 

Dr. Jawaharlal Rohatgi Smarak Netra Chikit Salaya (JLR eye hospital, Kanpur) 

Thanks to your support our newly established Vision-Aid Resource Center at JLR aims to expand its reach and impact in the coming quarter. With plans for referral partnerships, community engagement, and enhanced services, we’re committed to serving those in need with compassion and excellence. 

Other highlights 

Other highlights include:  

  1. Online training programs offering training in 12 disciplines reached 200+ beneficiaries across India helping them to enhance digital literacy and job skills 
  1. Digitial Accessibility Testing Center received two new contracts from U Mass, and Sakai form the US as well a new customer in India 
  1. Project Springboard continued to work with 20 blind schools across India to enhance their technical capabilities and capacity to train blind students 
  1. We celebrated the successful job placements of several visually impaired students (more details on this coming soon!) 
  1. A new version of AI-powered Smart Vision Glasses was released by our partner SHG Technologies and is undergoing beta testing for imminent roll out. The devices were featured on “Indian Idol” and as you may recall, we re-cast this at our recent Spring event.

A Digital Accessibility Testing Testimonial | Nibin Mathews

Nibin Mathews’ journey is a testament to resilience and determination. Despite facing

significant visual impairment challenges since birth, Nibin pursued education with unwavering determination. Losing sight in one eye due to a cricket ball stroke in 6th grade and later losing vision in the other eye to glaucoma didn’t deter him. He completed his Bachelor’s in English and even secured a job with Indian Railways. Yet, his thirst for knowledge led him to pursue computer programming, which he found through Vision-Aid. With their specialized training, he mastered coding and digital accessibility testing. With their financial support, he pursued a Master’s degree. Now, as the Accessibility Lead at Bosch Global Software Technologies, he’s excelling professionally. But Nibin’s achievements don’t stop there; he’s also an international tennis champion and a skilled violinist. He attributes much of his success to Vision-Aid, acknowledging their pivotal role in his journey. His story is not just one of personal triumph but also a testament to the impact of support systems in overcoming challenges and inspiring others.

A Job Coaching for Banking and other exams Testimonial | Gautam Gulati

Meet Gautam, a remarkable individual based in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, whose life story is a testament to resilience, determination, and the transformative power of organizations like Vision-Aid India.

Gautam’s life commenced with the diagnosis of Retinist Pigmentosa. Despite experiencing a 40% loss of sight, he persevered through attending a regular school, successfully completing his education and earning a B Com degree. His world took an unexpected turn after graduation, when, he had the major sight loss. Faced with the challenges of navigating everyday activities like driving, reading, writing print, and mobility etc. Yet, rather than allowing these obstacles to define him, he chose a path of resilience and determination. Undeterred by his circumstances, Gautam turned to technology, becoming dependent on tools designed for visually impaired individuals, including screen readers. His quest for independence led him to explore new technologies with the support of various NGOs. Through his social networks, Gautam discovered Vision-Aid India, an organization dedicated to empowering the visually impaired. Recognizing the potential for growth, he enrolled in Vision-Aid’s IBPS banking crash course, specifically tailored for visually impaired individuals, in April 2022.

Determined to enhance his skills further, Gautam pursued an additional course in mobile technology. This commitment to personal and professional growth showcased his unwavering spirit and determination.

Armed with newfound knowledge, Gautam faced the Bank of India Credit Officer exam after completing the IBPS crash course. His hard work, coupled with the right guidance from Vision-Aid, resulted in success. In 2023, Gautam proudly joined Bank of India as a Credit Officer, marking a significant milestone in his journey.

Gautam attributes his success and newfound independence to Vision-Aid India. With deep gratitude, he acknowledges the organization’s role in providing IBPS coaching and shaping his path towards independence.

Tejas

Tejas, born with visual impairment in Mumbai, pursued his education at a Blind School. After school, he graduated from St. Xavier’s College in 2007. His quest for technology education led him to NIIT Bangalore, but job challenges followed. He worked as an HR Recruiter at Thomson Reuters but continued his search for software engineering opportunities. Tejas found his path at Vision-Aid India, where he gained certifications in JavaScript, CSS, HTML, Python, and Digital Accessibility Testing. Vision-Aid then helped him secure a role as an Associate Software Engineer at Pristine InfoTech Inc. He’s deeply grateful to Vision-Aid for enabling visually impaired individuals to learn software languages and work independently as software engineers.

Bindhu Sri

Meet Bindu, from Hyderabad. Who began her life with the gift of perfect vision? She embarked on her educational journey in a conventional school, but at the tender age of 9, her world dimmed as Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) impacted her sight. Loosing major of her vision with lot of challenges she still could complete her graduate degree in 2020 and her post-graduate degree in 2022. Being interested to pursue her career in computer programming she discovered Vision-Aid India, a beacon of hope and opportunity. Enrolling in their online certification programs, Bindu successfully completed both Python and SQL languages. Armed with these newfound skills, she opened doors to her career, securing a position as a Data Engineer at RX Data Science, a renowned company.
